Welcome Message from the Principal, Mrs. Marsha Sookhoo
Our academic year 2020/ 2021 began on 1st September 2020 with a degree of uncertainty as we seek ways and strategies to function in the midst of a global pandemic. This has forced us to revisit and adjust the way we do things. Since the first lock-down on March 13th, we have shared the stress, frustration and uncertainty that most of our parents have been through and I would like it to be known, that the Administration and staff of Pleasantville Secondary commend each parent for going beyond self to ensure that our children remain safe... we thank you. We must never forget the dedication, pain, commitment and delivery of the curriculum by our teachers during this period, to them we say a heartfelt thanks. .The pandemic has impacted our lifestyle tremendously and this term will see changes in the way students are taught. The physical classroom space has been replaced by the virtual classroom where students will be engaged online the majority of the time and for the few that are unable to, our leadership team including both Vice Principals , Heads and Deans stand ready with solutions to ensure that no child is left behind. To ensure that we accomplish our mission, each child has been assigned an email address that will facilitate the online platforms identified for use by our teachers. This system will be tested by each level Dean from Wednesday 9th September 2020. Parents will be contacted by the level Deans.
Teaching will officially begin on Monday 14th September 2020. There will be no formal end of term exams as marks will be awarded for assignments given during the school term. These marks will be recorded as End of Term marks on students' permanent school records. Class time tables will be sent to each parent, posted on the school's Facebook page and shared with our stakeholders: PTA, Local School Board and our Alumni. Our Guidance Officer will also be engaging students online ensuring a smooth transition process.
It is my humble prayer that we support our hardworking and dedicated teachers while we understand the pain and struggles that you are going through. Please be safe.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Marsha Sookhoo
Principal
Our History
Pleasantville Secondary School was initially conceptualized as a Senior Comprehensive School that catered to Forms 4 and 5 only. The school officially opened on November 15th 1976, and the first intake of students was welcomed on November 29th, 1976.
In 2006, Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive accepted its first Form 1 intake, a mixture of boys and girls and the school's name was changed to 'Pleasantville Secondary School'. In 2010, we received our first batch of all male Form 1s. This was a Ministry effort to maximize student learning, based on the idea that boys and girls learn in different ways. However, this decision was reversed in 2013 and the Form 1 intake was a mix of both boys and girls.Male students wear a white shirt with monogram, burgundy trousers, black shoes and socks. Female students wear white shirts with monogram, burgundy skirts, black shoes and socks and white belt. Sixth Form students wear a burgundy tie.
The Visual and Performing Arts is one of the main highlights of the school, the school being perennial champions at the National Secondary School Dance Festival and Sanfest. Also, our students’ art work has adorned the calendars and walls of a number of corporate organisations such as PowerGen, Blue Waters and Petrotrin Indeed in the past, there was a committee called the Performing Arts Society (PAS), whose purpose was to ensure that the talent of the Pleasantville students was unearthed. Additionally, the school is also noted for its prowess in volleyball and football, with the girls’ team being national champions over the past 4 years. The school has enjoyed good academic success in the past; 12 national scholarships and special prizes at the National Examinations Council (N.E.C.).
